Projects

Each year, GHM sends volunteer healthcare teams to our sites in Latin America. Our teams include general physicians, surgeons, Optometrists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Occupational and Physical Therapists, Lab Technicians and other ancillary and non-clinical professionals.

Our teams provide primary care services to almost 5,000 patients, and 100 surgery patients. Primary care includes family medicine, pediatrics, ob/gyn, optometry, (including the provision of prescriptive lenses), and physical and occupational therapy. Surgical interventions include general surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology, orthopedic, vascular and reconstructive if staff and resources are available.

As part of GHM's educational activities, volunteers conducted structured courses, teaching disease management and prevention, infection process and control, body mechanics, breast self-exam, wound care, occupational therapy, body mechanics and therapeutics excercises.

In addition to the volunteer program, Global Health Ministry provided ongoing consultative and program support to a variety of public and community health initiatives.

Brazil
Global Health Ministry has sent three mission teams to Anapolis, Brazil. Our volunteers provided primary care at Lar San Francisco, staffed the emergency department of Santa Casa de Misericordia Hospital, led wound care, diabetes and occupational therapy classes and performed general and ophthalmologic surgeries. Special care was given to patients suffering from leprosy.

Peru
Two teams visited our site in Chulucanas this year as well as the parishes of San Jose Obrero, San Ramon, and Sagrada Familia. The June and November teams provided general and eye care and surgical care. In addition, GHM supported a healthcare promoter education program in the Diocese of Chulucanas, that responds to the health education needs of 350,000 citizens.

Haiti
Two teams spent ten days each in Haiti. These primary care teams saw over 1,000 patients in Port-au-Prince the surrounding communities of Cotin, Martissan, Delmas 33 and Turbe. GHM provides year-round support to the Mobile Clinic of the Centre Notre Dame de Lourdes and facilitated a donation of CPR equipment to teach medical students at the State University of Haiti in Port au Prince.

Jamaica
Nineteen volunteers made up teams to Jamaica in June and December. They worked in the Myrvilla, Rosetown, Tivoli Gardens, Trench Town and Whitfield communities of Kingston, areas ravaged by gang violence and poverty.

Guatemala
The June and November teams to Guatemala worked in the Timushan and Horcones communities as well as Chanmagua, providing primary and surgical care. GHM continued support of a midwife education program that trained 22 midwives this year, training programs for community health promoters, a water and sanitation initiative and a revolving fund pharmacy.

Immersion Experience for Catholic Healthcare Leaders
GHM also had the opportunity to lead and facilitate an immersion experience in Guatemala for CEOs and other leaders in Catholic healthcare. Eight healthcare leaders participated in the program, which included travel to GHM's sites in Chanmagua and Esquipulas in Guatemala. During this visit the participants were oriented in country by the Maryknoll community in Guatemala, toured several Guatemalan health facilities, taught classes in Chanmagua in basic health promotion and hygiene and provided carpentry instruction in small furniture building to 10 young men in the community.
