Projects
Each year, GHM sends volunteer health care teams to our sites in Latin America
and the Caribbean. Our teams include general physicians, surgeons, optometrists,
nurse practitioners, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, lab technicians and other ancillary and non-clinical professionals.
Our teams provide primary care services to almost 5,000 patients and 100 surgery patients. Primary care includes family medicine, pediatrics, ob/gyn, optometry, (including the provision of prescriptive lenses), and physical and occupational therapy. Surgical interventions include general surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology, orthopedic, vascular and reconstructive if staff and resources are available.
As part of GHM's educational activities, volunteers conducted structured courses, teaching disease management and prevention, infection process and control, body mechanics, breast self-exam, wound care, occupational therapy, body mechanics and therapeutics exercises.
In addition to the volunteer program, Global Health Ministry provides ongoing consultative and program support to a variety of public and community health initiatives.
Jamaica
In January 2011, a team of volunteers traveled to Jamaica to provide health care and medications to the community. Donations of supplies and medications were provided by
member hospitals of Catholic Health East from Maine to Florida. The team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other volunteers treated hundreds of patients during the
12-day mission.
Guatemala
In March 2011, a team of 19 volunteers traveled to Esquipulas to provide primary, dental and optometric care to area residents. Esquipulas is located in southeast
Guatemala on the border of Honduras. The team, which included physicians, nurses, dentists, optometrists, pharmacists and administrative staff, saw approximately 2,000
patients during the two week mission.
Peru
In June and October 2011, two mission teams traveled to Chulucanas, a remote town in northern Peru, to provide primary and surgical care to adults and children
at the hospital and in the surrounding villages in the foothills of the Andes. Each team of more than 50 volunteers included surgeons, pharmacists and nurses,
as well as administrative staff. Collectively, the surgery teams performed nearly 500 procedures and were supported by team members who managed all the supplies
and medications needed for surgery and discharge.

Haiti
In November 2011, a medical team of 15 volunteers traveled to Gros Morne, Haiti for a 10-day mission. The team traveled six to eight hours by truck from Port-au-Prince to
the small town located approximately 100 miles north of the capital. There, they set up primary care clinics and also provided health education in one of the schools.
Each day the team packed a truck with all the medications and supplies they needed for the day and headed out for an hour or more over rough unpaved roads to rural
communities with little or no access to medical care.
